Our first outing finds this legendary duo on stage at New York City's Lone Star Cafe in February, 1985. Long before this date it had become Standard Operating Procedure with their club dates for the band to warm up with a few tunes, then for Buddy to take center stage for a set before bringing out Junior. In the case of this boot, we see this very template. The first couple tracks has guitarist Pete Allen fronting a band that includes Ike Anderson on bass and Jerry Porter on the drums. It's a dandy warm-up, too. Buddy joins them for a fully-charged and decidedly-Buddy take on Dust My Broom (while also riffing on Sweet Home Chicago) Buddy's playing throughout this gig is razor's-edged and ripping.
Everyone's in good humor tonight and Buddy is clearly having fun through his "Guitar Imitations," mimicking the styles of his Chicago mentors. He concludes this by saying, "...now let me show you how Junior Wells sounds," thundering then into his Low Down Dirty Shame opening riffs.
Junior comes out strong, giving Low Down Dirty a healthy, slicker-than-greased-owlshit reading. Heading into Ships on the Ocean, Junior's vocals just aren't quite hitting the spot. "Sing, motherfucker!" Buddy goads him playfully, and Junior slides a whole lot closer into the pocket.
And he stays there, right along with a band that's just getting it on through the balance of the this off the radar bootleg.
