Blue Monday: Muddy in Paris, '72

I'm a believer in life's "simple, perfect pleasures." A misty dawn breaking across this lake. Your lady's thighs cleaving about your hips. Muddy Waters sliding into a juicy Rollin 'n' Tumblin'. Sometimes life just don't seem finer.


Muddy Waters in Paris, 1972 never did kick up much of a fuss when the obscure Pablo label released it in 1997. And that's a crying shame. Muddy's got a spate of live releases, of both the official and bootleg varieties, and it's easy for exceedingly strong material to get lost in the shuffle. As seems to be the case here.

From an infrequently-played treat of Clouds in My Heart to the romping Blow Wind and Walkin' Thru the Park, Muddy's playing from right in the pocket, out in front of a band that includes Mojo Buford, Louis Myers, and Pinetop Perkins. I've a few Muddy in Paris shows here and they all seem to kick ass. There was just something about the City of Light that brought out a spark from Muddy.
